Newcastle United make it three straight wins in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 success over Burnley at St James' Park.

Newcastle United made it three straight wins in the Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 success over Burnley at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon.

Miguel Almiron opened the scoring in the 14th minute of the contest before Alexander Isak netted the home side's second from the penalty spot in the 76th minute.

Eddie Howe's side have moved into eighth spot in the table, boasting 12 points from seven matches, while Burnley sit 19th, with the Clarets still waiting for their first win of the campaign.

Burnley had a half-chance inside the first two minutes when Luca Koleosho broke down the right before delivering a dangerous low cross into the Newcastle box, but Aaron Ramsey just failed to make contact.

More good work from Koleosho created a chance for Zeki Amdouni in the fifth minute, but Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was on hand to make a smart save.

Newcastle made the breakthrough in the 14th minute against the run of play, though, with Almiron finding the back of the net from distance after a clever pass from Kieran Trippier.

The Magpies had a golden chance to double their lead in the 28th minute when Isak was sent through on goal, but Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford did well from the striker's initial effort, before the ball was sent wide of the post by the Sweden international.

Trafford made an even better save late in the first half to deny Elliot Anderson, before the Burnley goalkeeper was again called into action to keep out Almiron.

Trippier had one deflected just wide of the Burnley post early in the second period, before Fabian Schar just failed to make contact on a cross from Almiron, with the visitors surviving another dangerous moment.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute of the match when Ameen Al-Dakhil brought Anthony Gordon to the ground, and Isak stepped up to double the home side's advantage at St James' Park.

Pope then made a smart save to keep out a header from Al-Dakhil down the other end, with Burnley looking to set up a grandstand finish.

There was to be no late drama on Saturday afternoon, though, with Newcastle easing to a third league victory in a row, while Burnley remain on a single point inside the relegation zone.
