Late Bakary Sako penalty gives Wolverhampton Wanderers win

A late penalty from Bakary Sako gives Wolverhampton Wanderers a 1-0 win over 10-man Shrewsbury Town.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have defeated Shrewsbury Town 1-0, thanks to a late Bakary Sako penalty.

The hosts will feel that they deserved something from the game, having pushed their opponents back for much of the second half.

An end-to-end start saw both goalkeepers forced into action early on. First Chris Weale denied Sako and then Carl Ikeme thwarted good efforts from Jon Taylor and Ryan Woods.

Weale again came to his side's aid from Bjorn Sigurdarson shortly after, tipping a header onto the post.

In the second half it was Shrewsbury who continued to dominate the ball without really testing Ikeme. They should have gone ahead 15 minutes from the end, but Luke Summerfield headed wide after being found free inside the box.

Then, with seven minutes to go, the referee decided that Taylor deliberately handled the ball on the goalline and sent the winger off after awarding the visitors a penalty.

Sako made no mistake from the spot, smashing the ball in to give his side three important points.
