Cordoba throw away two-goal lead, miss out on first La Liga win at Elche

La Liga's bottom club Cordoba miss out on their first win of the season by throwing away a two-goal lead at fellow strugglers Elche.

Cordoba missed out on the chance to win their first match of the season by throwing away a two-goal lead at Elche in this evening's match between La Liga's bottom two sides.

Elche had an early opportunity to go in front in the sixth minute when Aleksandar Pantic brought down Cristian Herrera just inside the box, but Jonathas had his penalty saved by Juan Carlos.

Cordoba punished the miss by scoring the opener five minutes later. Fidel ran onto Borja Garcia's clever reverse pass and opened his body to slot home.

Jonathas almost atoned for his penalty miss just before half time with a rocket from distance before Cordoba doubled their lead after the break on the hour mark.

Garcia again was the provider, playing a neat one-two with Federico Cartabia, who finished in a similar fashion to Fidel.

The away side appeared to be on course for their first win of the season, but it wasn't to be as Elche fought back for a point.

They won a second penalty moments after Cartabia's goal that this time David Lomban took and scored.

Jonathas netted the equaliser with a powerful first-time volley under pressure from Domingo Cisma's left-wing cross.

Cordoba have a league-high seven draws in 12 games this season and remain bottom, three points adrift of safety. Elche climb one place to 18th.
