FA gives Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan one-week extension to respond to charge

The FA gives Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan a one-week extension to respond to his misconduct charge in relation to alleged anti-Semitic comments.

The Football Association has handed Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan a one-week extension to respond to his misconduct charge.

The 78-year-old made comments that are deemed "abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute" during an interview with The Guardian.

Whelan is believed to have made offensive remarks about the Jewish community and also described Chinese people as "chinks".

Initially, the businessman was given until 6pm tomorrow to respond to the charge, but the English governing body has extended the time by one week.

Whelan previously threatened to quit his post at the Championship club if he were found guilty.
