Newly-promoted Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest open talks with Union Berlin over the potential signing of Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, according to a report.

Newly-promoted Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Union Berlin over the potential signing of Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, according to a report.

The striker has enjoyed a successful two years with the Bundesliga outfit, initially joining Die Eisernen on a one-year loan deal from Liverpool in 2020, before signing on a permanent deal for around £6.5m last summer.

The Nigeria international failed to make a competitive appearance for the first team on Merseyside after being brought to the academy at the age of 18.

Several loan moves to numerous sides around Europe followed, but it is in the German capital that Awoniyi has shone most.

Forest are interested in bringing the striker back to England during the current transfer window however, with The Athletic reporting that talks over a potential move have begun.

The report suggests that Awoniyi is keen on a move back to the Premier League, and should a transfer take place, it would likely see Forest pay Union €20m (£17.2m) for his services - the release clause included within his current contract.

The 24-year-old has played a big part in Union's success in the Bundesliga across the past two seasons, and during the 2021-22 campaign, Awoniyi scored 20 goals in 43 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Forest boss Steve Cooper is keen to add to his attacking options this summer, with Lewis Grabban's future up in the air, and with Keinan Davis and Philip Zinckernagel returning to their parent clubs upon the end of their loan spells at the City Ground.
