Tottenham Hotspur 'interested in signing Jean-Philippe Mateta'

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Mainz 05 striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to a report.

Mainz 05 striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has reportedly emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old has been in strong form for his German club during the 2020-21 campaign, scoring 10 times in nine appearances in all competitions, including seven goals in eight Bundesliga outings.

According to Calciomercato, Spurs are admirers of the former France Under-21 international, who has two and a half years left to run on his contract with Mainz.

The report, though, claims that Napoli are also interested in the attacker, suggesting that the two clubs could battle for his signature at the start of 2021.

Mateta has scored 27 times in 63 appearances for his current side since arriving from Lyon, where he failed to make the grade after a switch from Chateauroux.

Tottenham signed Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica over the summer to provide competition for Harry Kane, but the 25-year-old has not scored in his four appearances for Jose Mourinho's side.
