Cristiano Ronaldo 'was offered to Manchester United last summer'

Italian journalist Emanuele Gamba claims that Manchester United were offered the chance to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus last summer.

Manchester United were reportedly offered the chance to re-sign Juventus attacker Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner plied his trade at Old Trafford for six years between 2003 and 2009, scoring 118 goals and winning three Premier League titles before departing for Real Madrid.

Now at Juventus, the 36-year-old's future remains shrouded in uncertainty following the Old Lady's exit from the Champions League, and Italian journalist Emanuele Gamba claims that Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes offered his client to both Man United and Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Speaking to Calciomercato, Gamba said: "Will he leave? I think the only time there was a chance for that was last summer, and I think his staff moved in that direction.

"I believe Mendes moved to see if there were any possibilities and did not find them. I doubt that a year later, with an even older and more out of fashion Ronaldo, these possibilities will reappear.

"Essentially, Mendes had urged Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United to make a move, who both said no. Frankly, I don't see the possibility of anything different happening now, at least in Europe."

Ronaldo has less than 18 months left to run on his Juventus deal, where he has notched up 27 goals in 32 games across all competitions this season, but any hopes of a sixth European crown for the Portugal international were dashed by Porto on Tuesday evening.
