England boss Gareth Southgate reportedly emerges as a shock candidate to take over as the next permanent Manchester United manager at the end of the season.

Manchester United have reportedly added England boss Gareth Southgate to their shortlist in their search for a new permanent manager.

Current interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's short-term deal expires at the end of this season, although the Norwegian's impressive record at the helm so far has catapulted him into the frame to get the job for a longer stint.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino remains United's top target, although the Old Trafford board are concerned that he may be too difficult and expensive to prise away from North London.

The Telegraph reports that the Red Devils are now considering a move for Southgate, who led England to the semi-finals of the World Cup last year.

Southgate's current contract with the FA lasts until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but the report claims that he could be tempted by the Old Trafford post.

The 48-year-old's only previous managerial experience at club level came with Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009.
