Davide Zappacosta could return to Chelsea after picking up a serious knee injury during a training session with Roma, according to a report.

Davide Zappacosta could reportedly return to Chelsea in the near future after picking up a serious knee injury during a training session with loan club Roma on Friday.

The 27-year-old joined Roma on a short-term deal during the summer and was expected to remain with the Italian giants until at least January with the option to extend until the end of the season.

However, according to Sky Sports Italy, Zappacosta suffered what appeared to be a cruciate ligament injury on Friday, meaning that the defender could return to his parent club to begin treatment.

The right-back has only played 12 minutes of football for Roma this season having also picked up a calf injury in September which kept him on the sidelines for a month.

Zappacosta made 35 appearances for Chelsea during his first season at the club, but the Italian struggled for action last term, featuring in just four Premier League games for the Blues.
