Neil Fox confirms that Pop Idol will return for a one-off special later this year to mark the show's 20th anniversary.

Neil Fox - aka Dr Fox - has confirmed that Pop Idol will return for a one-off special later this year.

The reality show aired on ITV for two series between 2001 and 2003, making household names out of the likes of Will Young and Gareth Gates, but went off air after being usurped by The X Factor.

Last month it emerged that ITV was considering a revival of the show, albeit in a limited form - and now it appears that it could return as a retrospective.

"A Pop Idol reunion is certainly on the cards - where have 20 years gone!" Fox - one of the original judges - told The Sun.

"Be great to get back on the screens with a one off special. Gareth Gates was always one of my favourite - he's an amazing talent."

Fox was joined on the judging panel by Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman and Nicki Chapman.
