Simon Cowell reportedly signs a deal with Channel 5 to air a new series of The X Factor in 2023.

The X Factor will reportedly make a surprise move from ITV to Channel 5 when it returns next year.

The singing competition - created by Simon Cowell - was a key part of ITV's schedules for almost two decades but was dropped in 2019 amid flagging ratings.

Last month it emerged that Cowell had decided to revive the format and was in talks with various broadcasters over airing the new series, and the Daily Star says that a deal has now been struck with Channel 5.

"As soon as X Factor was up for grabs, there was interest from a number of the networks," a source told the newspaper.

"X Factor is one of the most iconic shows in TV history, so it's no surprise lots of channels were keen. The production company had their pick. After a lot of meetings, execs decided to go with Channel 5.

"This is the start of a new chapter for X Factor. Moving to a new channel gives the creative team a chance to completely revamp the format and do something different."

The new series is expected to enter production later this year for broadcast on Channel 5 in the second half of 2023.
