Carlos Marin of the classical quartet Il Divo dies from coronavirus at the age of 53.

Il Divo singer Carlos Marin has died at the age of 53 after contracting coronavirus.

The classical quartet were formed by Simon Cowell in 2003, bringing together singers from Switzerland, France, the US and Spain.

Marin, a baritone from Madrid, fell ill with COVID on December 7 and was placed into a coma at a hospital in Manchester.

In a statement on social media today, Il Divo said: "It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away.

"He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There will never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.

"For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend.

"We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love -- David, Sebastien and Urs."

Prior to Marin's death the band had been due to perform gigs in Lisbon and La Coruna as part of their 2021 tour.
