Piers Morgan claims that he has had "third-party feelers" about a return to Good Morning Britain.

Piers Morgan has claimed that he has been asked to return to Good Morning Britain less than three months after he quit the ITV breakfast show.

The 56-year-old decided to leave the programme in March - having co-hosted with Susanna Reid for more than five years - amid a huge backlash over his criticism of Meghan Markle for her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Morgan had been vocal on the show about his disbelief of most of Markle's claims, and when senior executives at ITV asked him to offer an on-air apology, he refused and instead handed in his resignation.

Ironically, Morgan's final edition of GMB saw it beat the BBC's Breakfast in the ratings for the first time but since he left the viewing figures have plummeted to around one third of their peak - with last Wednesday's edition averaging around 700,000 viewers.

Speaking to The Sun, however, Morgan claimed that he had been contacted about a possible U-turn in an effort to halt the ratings decline.

"I have had some quite random third-party feelers put out to see if I would consider a return to the show," he said.

"I don't want to say on the record who, but a pretty close third-party... As the Americans say, they reached out - there have been approaches to test the water in the wake of their obvious ratings issues.

"It makes me sad to see all the hard work we did to beat the BBC in viewing numbers evaporate so fast. It's their problem to work out... but never say never."

Morgan returns to ITV this Thursday for a new episode of Piers Morgan's Life Stories featuring Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
